Eligibility:
- Tourism trip;
- visit to relatives and/or friends;
- scientists, professors or researchers attending cultural, technological or scientific conferences, seminars.
(In this case, an invitation letter must be submitted) - participation in artistic or amateur sport competitions, whenever no monetary prize or paid admission is involved. (Within consular jurisdiction only – DC,MD,KY,OH,VA,WV and North American bases, excepting Guam)

Tourist visa holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil.
Procedures:
Submission to the Consular Service:
1) one visa application form per applicant, properly and completely filled in. Note: Every applicant must complete Item 21 of the visa application form, “Comments” (Purpose of Trip). In this section, the applicant must explain precisely what they are going to do while in Brazil. For especially complex trips, the applicant may submit details on an extra sheet of paper, if necessary. Each visa application form must be duly signed by the applicant (and parents must sign the application forms for those under 18 years of age), and must be submitted together with the following documentation:
2) A passport (valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date, and with at least one blank page available for the visa stamp);
- for non-Americans returning to the United States, copy of green card or valid re-entry visa allowing for re-entry into the United States;
- for non-Americans without a green card or valid re-entry visa into the United States, valid visa to country of final destination after the trip to Brazil (this requirement does not apply to applicants returning to their country of citizenship);
3) one recent 2″ x 2″ passport-type photo, either in color or black and white, front view, full face, with a light background (snapshots are not accepted);
4) a photocopy of a round-trip ticket in one’s name; or a signed letter on travel agency stationary, with confirmed round trip bookings; or, if traveling by land, a notarized bank letter concerning the balances in one’s bank accounts, signed by the bank’s manager, as proof of financial capacity to pay for one’s stay in Brazil;
5) as applicable (i.e., for participation in athletic or performing arts event or competition ), copy of letter by sponsors with detailed information on the event and conditions of attendance;
6) a visa fee payment, as applicable (see visa fees table). A non-refundable processing fee of US$ 130.00 per visa will be charged to US citizens in reciprocity for the identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a visa to the United States of America;
Methods of Payment Accepted by the Consular Section of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington
6a) a non-refundable handling fee of US$10.00 per visa applies to visa applications submitted by mail or by any individual other than the applicant or an immediate member of his or her family.
7) as applicable, Yellow Fever Immunization International Certificate is required only if the applicant has traveled within the last 90 days to any of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Bissau Guinea, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Camerun, Central African Republic, Colombia, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guiana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenia, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Surinam, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda or Venezuela. Yellow Fever Immunization International Certificate is advisable if applicant’s destination in Brazil includes any of the following States: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and/or Tocantins;
8) a person under 18 years of age not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s) must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian authorizing this Consulate to issue a visa. A copy of the minor’s birth certificate or, as applicable, the guardianship document, is also required.
Note: Mail Applications – Applications may be submitted by mail only by residents of the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with appropriate postage for return of passport. US POSTAL SERVICE First Class, Certified, Priority or Express Mail is advisable. Documents will neither be received nor returned via FEDEX. Please not howerver that THE CONSULAR SERVICE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR PASSPORTS SENT BY MAIL.
Note: Persons from other Consular Jurisdictions – The Consular Service will process visa applications submitted by individuals who are not residents within its consular jurisdiction only if applicant comes in person to the Consular Service.
Note: The requirements listed above should not, in any way, be considered all-inclusive. The Brazilian Consular Office processing the visa reserves the right to apply additional requirements when they are deemed necessary.
Important: First arrival in Brazil must take place within 90 days from the date the visa was issued. This visa is good for multiple entries for the time of the visa’s duration (for authorized stays of up to 90 days per visit within that period). If necessary, an extension may be obtained from the Federal Police in Brazil, if requested at least 30 days prior to its expiration, for a total stay of up to 180 days per year.
Note: Non-US Citizens: Citizens of some countries do not require a visa to visit Brazil for tourism purposes, for a stay of up to 90 days (if necessary an extension may be authorized by the Federal Police in Brazil).
Visas will be issued on a “laissez-passer” to nationals of the following countries: Bhutan, Central African Republic, Comoros, Kampuchea,Taiwan.
Brazilian nationals must enter and leave Brazil with their Brazilian passport only. Those who have lost their Brazilian nationality must submit proof that the Brazilian Decree of renunciation of their Brazilian citizenship was published in the ” Diário Oficial”.
Processing time:
- Tourist visas are normally issued on four business days of receipt of the visa application and appropriate paperwork.
- For all applications submitted by mail, processing time will be 15 business days.
